‘Rude’ pregnancy photo banned from Facebook

IS this too rude?

Facebook thought so, but the two women involved in this photo see it as nothing of the sort.

Photographer Lani Carter had hoped to use this photo of her friend, Kylie Denaro, in late pregnancy on a Facebook page to promote her business.

But Facebook denied Ms Carter's attempt to post it, saying it did not meet its standards because it was too sexual and contained too much nudity.

Ms Carter defended the photo, saying there was nothing sexual about it and her friend's pose was both tasteful and not too revealing.

She said Facebook's reaction was typical of an outdated attitude that pregnancy should be hidden rather than celebrated.

Facebook's reaction said a pregnant woman's body was "really shameful, that they should try and hide it away and not celebrate it's beauty," she said.

Ms Carter said she was not anti-Facebook "but I don't think it's an appropriate message to be sending to women, that you have to hide your body."

"You are made to make babies and create life and what your body's gone through when your pregnant is amazing."

Mrs Denaro, who was reluctant for Ms Carter to post the photo online a year ago when it was taken, said she had been influenced by other people's opinions but had since changed her mind.

"I don't care if people feel that way. I think it's beautiful. I don't really understand why there's a problem."

She said she could not understand why Facebook would not permit the photo yet photographs of women in bikins and far more revealing and suggestive poses were permitted.
